I Am Sad to be a Basketball Fan after Watching the Unimpressive Spurs Sweep the Atrocious Cavs in the Worst Finals in NBA History!
Thank goodness it’s over. Usually I get sad at the conclusion of the NBA Finals as it’s the last basketball game of the season. Never before have I been so happy to see the Finals end after this stinker between the San Antonio Spurs and the Cleveland Cavs.
The Spurs finished the Cavs with an 83-82 Game Four victory that was the antithesis of quality basketball. San Antonio basically gave the Cavs the last two games in this series to win, and Cleveland bumbled and fumbled it away.
It only took Lebron James 15 quarters in this series to start attacking the rim as Cleveland actually took a three-point lead in the fourth quarter after being down most of the game. Spurs’ guard Manu Ginobli saved the Spurs in the fourth quarter and finished with a team-high 27 points. Soon to be NBA Finals MVP Tony Parker had zero points in the fourth as the Cavs got physical on defense.
And yet, Cleveland still had their chances but literally coughed the ball out of bounds. James had an easy two-hand rebound bounced off his hands and go out of bounds. A few minutes later, he had a chance to get a Cavs’ fast break going but kicked the ball out of bounds.
San Antonio fittingly won this series at the free throw line as Ginobli sank two free throws with 1.7 seconds left to give the Spurs an insurmountable 83-79 lead. As Damon Jones sank a three at the buzzer to finish the game, the Spurs came off the bench in one of the most pathetic championship celebrations you’ll ever see.
In the decisive clincher, San Antonio did not score more than 23 points in any quarter. Tim Duncan was again brutal on offense, scoring 12 points.
And yet they’re talking of the Spurs as a dynasty. What a joke. This series was as bad as it gets, and there’s no way to spin how terrible the Spurs were in these two games in Cleveland. They were lucky to get the Cavs, which is not only the worst team to ever make the NBA Finals but the worst-coached team to ever get this far.
What no one seems to talk about with San Antonio is how fortunate they’ve been in this year’s playoffs and over their four titles in the last nine years. Three of the four teams they’ve defeated in the NBA Finals have been absolutely junk.
Their path to this year’s title can hardly qualify as exemplary. They beat a terrible Nuggets’ team with a wannabe superstar in Carmelo Anthony and an aging Allen Iverson. They then relied on Robert Horry’s thuggery and the NBA’s stupidity to knock off the Suns in a terribly called series. They then got a Utah Jazz squad that was lucky to get this far (would the Spurs have beaten the Mavs?) and finally finished with a Cleveland team that was so inept that it’s beyond comprehension.
Screw the Spurs. This year’s team was garbage and had all the breaks. Crap is crap which perfectly describes the Spurs, Lebron James, Mike Brown, the Cleveland Cavs and the 2007 NBA Finals.
As this game was so atrocious, here are my observations on what I found especially disturbing tonight.
? How sad was this: ABC was asking fans to text message who should be the NBA Finals MVP. Bruce “freaking” Bowen’s name was on that list, option A if you’re wondering.
? It’s funny how you can call the Cavs scoring ten points and the Spurs zero in the first 5:49 of the fourth quarter as being a run by Cleveland. Come on guys. That’s just sad. Runs are supposed to be quick and efficient, not spread out for nearly half of the quarter because of the ineptitude of both teams.
? Mike Breen is like the Spurs: vanilla and boring. I had grown to like Breen over the last couple of the years but he is too in love with this Spurs’ team. No offense, Mike. This Spurs’ team is not pleasing to the eye as you depict. It really is no fun to see Fabricio Oberto and Tim Duncan going over the backs of Cleveland guys late in the game. Basketball is not supposed to be played like football. Breen is the perfect guy to call these games. I’m glad he enjoyed this garbage.
? Who coaches the Cavs: Brown or Eric Snow? ABC once again cut to Snow trying to get the team fired up. Even though Snow sounded like a complete idiot telling his teammates they either go home or advance (Eric, a Game Four victory would not have represented the Cavs advancing anywhere; it would have just delayed the inevitable), at least he showed emotion. Brown is atrocious. I’ve never seen a more disinterested coach in the NBA Finals. Whatever this guy is making per season should be refunded after watching him sit on his behind the whole series. No wonder James has such a poor understanding of being on the attack. Being nonchalant is the only thing he’s learned under Brown.
? Mike Wilbon’s halftime essay on the Spurs being a dynasty sounded all professional and nice, but it was off the point and flat-out wrong. He did note how the Spurs have not repeated and should have said how San Antonio has never advanced past the second round in the year after winning a title. He also made a stupid comparison of Duncan and Michael Jordan, saying that Duncan has put rings on the fingers of more teammates than Jordan. Don’t ever compare Tim “The Big Fundamental” Duncan to Michael Jordan, the greatest player and competitor in the history of the game.
? James’ Gave Five performance against the Pistons might have been spectacular, but his effort in the Finals is more evident of where he is in his career. As I was watching the game, my brother made the great point of calling James “The Anti-Jordan.” Boy was he right. James might have been aggressive in the fourth quarter of this game but he basically fumbled away a chance to win this game. This series did prove one thing to me: I’ll take the less-talented but super-competitive Dwyane Wade over the passive Lebron James any day of the week. It’s going to take James to be a superman for a long time to get over his crappy competitive attitude and NBA Finals. After what he did this series, I don’t think James has the competitive greatness to ever reach his full potential and be called one of the best to ever play the game when things are all said and done.
