A Classic between the Cavs and Pistons, Billy Donovan’s Move to the Pro Ranks, & Steve Kerr’s Rise from Announcer to G.M.
Time to take a deep breath. No. I’m not recovering from my jog around the park at the start of the fourth quarter of Game Five between the Detroit Pistons and the Cleveland Cavaliers with Chinese food not yet digested in my stomach. I’m exhausted from this unreal day in the NBA that saw a dominating performance by Lebron James, three coaching changes (including Billy Donovan leaving Florida for the Orlando Magic), and a big move to the front office for one broadcaster. Here’s the recap.
? Lebron James has the Cleveland Cavaliers on the brink of its first NBA Finals appearance after scoring 48 points, including 29 of his team’s final 30 points, during a 109-107 victory in double-overtime against the Detroit Pistons in Game Five of the Eastern Conference Finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills. James gave the Cavs the lead for good with a layup with 2.2 seconds left, and Pistons’ guard Chauncey Billups missed a shot to tie the game and send it to triple overtime.
? With a strong freshman class coming in and a chance to go down as a living legend in the college game, Billy Donovan is leaving the University of Florida after back-to-back national championships to become the new coach of the Orlando Magic. The deal apparently is five years for a combined $27.5 million.
? In less sexier moves, two other teams filled their vacant head coaching positions. Larry Bird returned to his Boston roots by bringing former Celtics’ Head Coach Jim O’Brien on board as the new coach of the Indiana Pacers. The Memphis Grizzlies replaced Tony Barone with Phoenix Suns’ Assistant Coach Marc Iavaroni.
? According to some reports, Kobe Bryant apparently wants to be traded again.
? After calling Game Five between the Cavs and Pistons, TNT Analyst Steve Kerr is apparently heading to the Suns to be the team’s president of basketball operations and general manager.
It’s time to go to bed.
