Even Game One of the Heat-Mavs Drew More TV Viewers than Thursday’s Putrid Cavs-Spurs Tilt!

I was at a wedding last night when some of my family and I got to talking about Game One between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the San Antonio Spurs (Pepe Le Pu). The consensus was apparently in line with my impressions of the game. My cousin Brian said he turned the game off at halftime because of the low score (40-35 in favor of San Antonio). Another cousin Mike said that the series has no interest outside of San Antonio and Cleveland (but hasn’t Lebron’s commercial appeal already transcended that of Michael Jordan’s; at least, that’s how some pundits have been spinning it). The television figures from Game One were atrocious, as this Associated Press story depicts:

Game 1 of the NBA Finals drew the lowest rating ever for an opening-game in prime time, dropping 19 percent from last year.

The San Antonio Spurs’ 85-76 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night earned a 6.3 rating and 11 share on ABC. The previous low was a 6.4/11 in 2003.

Last year’s Game 1 between Miami and Dallas earned a 7.8 rating and 14 share.

The rating is the percentage watching a telecast among all homes with televisions, and the share is the percentage tuned in to a broadcast among those households with televisions on at the time. A ratings point represents 1,114,000 households.

What else is there to say after Game One? This really comes as no surprise. The Spurs will have won four titles in nine years through their plodding and boring style. The Cavs are arguably one of the worst teams to ever come out of the Eastern Conference (with the 2002 New Jersey Nets right next to them). Even James playing in the NBA Finals couldn’t get anyone excited. His performance certainly didn’t help even though he will be much better in Game Two.

This series is going to be an offensively defensive one, with Game One providing a strong odor of things to come. Looks like my estimation that one of these games could be in the 70’s might have been a bit on the cautious side.
