Boston Celtics 98, Toronto Raptors 95
by Chris Maynard, chris@hoops4thesoul.com
Well it sounded like a great ending to the NBA Game of the Day between the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors.
With the Celtics leading by three points with seven seconds to go in overtime, Toronto point guard T.J. Ford hit a three to tie the game. After a Celtics timeout, Boston guard Ray Allen hit a three out of the corner as time expired to give the Green and White a 98-95 victory.
Unfortunately, Comcast Boston’s coverage of the game lost its video feed in the final 10 seconds of overtime, leaving us NBA League Pass viewers to listen to the audio. And before the highlights could be retrieved, League Pass cut out once the Celtics sent the game to its post-game studio.
With all the final dramatics considered and despite the fact that the final video wasn’t present, this game was indicative of Boston’s potential with the Big Three. This was a grinder of a game that didn’t pick up until the end of the fourth quarter, but Boston showed that it could hold a lead with tough defense while waiting for its offense to pick up.
And when the game got to crunch time in overtime, Garnett and Allen showed how tough this team will be come playoff time. Garnett took over in overtime, scoring six points against Chris Bosh, before Allen’s heroics. Allen led Boston with 33 points on an efficient 11-for-16 shooting. Garnett got his 400th straight double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Add 6 assists to Garnett’s final line with his overall intensity, and it’s safe to say that KG has been revived.
While Paul Pierce struggled, going 4-for-17 from the field for 13 points, Boston showed that it could win in a tough environment without needing all three of its superstars to dominate. Boston got great contributions off the bench from Eddie House and James Posey, an underrated free-agent signing who showed that he will bring toughness to this team. While there are still questions to whether Rajon Rondo is ready to handle the point-guard duties on this team, Boston looks very good.
As for Toronto, this team needs to get more recognition. The Raptors are going to be there all year in the East, especially with the way that T.J. Ford runs the point. Ford can really teach Chicago Bulls’ guard Kirk Hinrich about the value of getting into the lane, as the former Texas star penetrated against the Celtics all night. Playing with ice water in his veins, Ford made tough threes when it mattered and drove with reckless abandon en route to finishing with 32 points and five assists.
Once Chris Bosh gets healthier on the court, the Raptors are going to be a tough out in the playoffs. This team plays like the current Chicago Bulls used to, hard all the time, and have dangerous players in Ford, Bosh (you’ve got to love Bosh’s intensity) and Andrea Bargnani along with solid pieces like Anthony Parker, Jose Calderon and even Jason Kapono, who has been surprisingly more than a three-point shooter thus far for the Raptors.
Wow, if today was any indication of things to come, Boston and Toronto could develop quite a little rivalry here. If these two teams meet in the second round as Hoops 4 the Soul predicted, that will be quite a memorable series.
