Bob Cousy 1956 Sports Illustrated Cover Eddie Mathews Sports Illustrated Cover Ken Sears 1954 Sports Illustrated Cover  Appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated has been interpreted in good and bad lights over the years, sometimes as a symbol of arriving in the nation’s sports consciousness as a budding phenom, many times in recognition of individual, team, championship and career accomplishments, and yet other times as an unintended yet grim prognosticator of future struggles (which has come to be known as the dreaded SI Cover Jinx).

Fifty-three years ago today, Boston Celtics legend Bob Cousy was the first pro basketball player ever featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, some 17 months after the magazine’s first issue.

More specificially, SI debuted on August 16, 1954 with Eddie Matthews of the Milwaukee Braves displaying his sweet left-handed swing at the plate during a game at Milwaukee County Stadium. Santa Clara’s Ken Sears was the first basketball player to appear on the SI cover when he was pictured shooting a hook shot on the December 20, 1954 issue of the magazine.

In that time, many more basketball players have been featured on the cover of the magazine.

As of 2003, Michael Jordan led all athletes with 49 cover appearances.

Unlike an old Showtime fastbreak, Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Magic Johnson filled the three and four spots between Muhammad Ali and Jack Nicklaus with 29 and 22 respective SI cover appearances.
