The Chicago Bulls will wear a uniform patch honoring the late Johnny “Red” Kerr and Norm Van Lier for the remainder of the season, General Manager John Paxson announced today.
“This is the right way to honor the memories of both Johnny and Norm,” Paxson was quoted as saying on Tribune Writer K.C. Johnson’s Bulls blog. “Every time our players put on their uniform the rest of the year, they will be reminded of what Johnny and Norm meant to the Chicago Bulls. Johnny and Norm’s inspiration and legacy will forever be a part of our franchise’s fabric.”
Van Lier and Kerr both passed away last Thursday.
Van Lier was found dead in his aparment blocks away from the United Center, and his death was attributed to natural causes. Van Lier, a fiery guard for the Bulls during the seventies and a commentator on the team since the nineties, had dealt with advanced heart disease during the last couple of years.
Just hours after Van Lier was found dead, Kerr succumbed to a long battle with prostate cancer. Kerr was the first coach of the Bulls and a familiar voice of the team as a broadcaster for more than 30 years.
Kudos to the Bulls for continuing to honor the beloved Kerr and Van Lier with such continued class following its stirring, emotional and balanced video tribute to both men prior to last Saturday night’s home game against the Houston Rockets.
Now here’s a suggestion. The Bulls should seriously consider incorporating Kerr’s nickname on their jerseys, a la how Marquette University has done so with legendary coach Al McGuire’s first name on their uniform tops.
If this is allowed by the NBA, the Bulls shouldn’t think twice about doing this, especially when considering Kerr’s impact on the franchise’s humble beginnings, the fact that he was around the team for most of its existence, and his unmatched love and passion for the organization.
Sure, Michael Jordan is the most important figure in Bulls history, but would Chicago pro basketball have survived without the enthusiasm and magneticism of Kerr during those early years?
While incorporating Kerr’s “Red” nickname on the Bulls uniforms may seem a bit collegiate, I think this would set a neat, new precedent in the NBA, where many players care more about the names on the back of their uniforms as opposed to the names on the front of them!
Having “Red” forever incorporated onto Chicago’s uniforms would be a historical symbol and reminder of what this franchise is supposed to be about.
While a “Red” logo probably would have little to no bearing on the players, it would be a great way for fans to remember what Kerr stood for when it came to the Chicago Bulls.
