Michael Jordan’s Spectacular Move in Game Two of the 1991 NBA Finals Another View of Michael Jordan’s Spectacular Move in Game Two of the 1991 NBA Finals Michael Jordan Hugs the Championship Trophy after Winning the 1991 NBA Finals After finally dethroning the Detroit Pistons, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and the Chicago Bulls were still considered underdogs to the aging Los Angeles Lakers in the 1991 NBA Finals.

A lot of people felt that the experience of Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Byron Scott and other Lakers players would be too much for a Chicago team that had never been this far in franchise history.

Well, these doubters looked right after the first game of the 1991 NBA Finals when L.A.’s Sam Perkins hit a late three that stunned the Bulls and shifted home court advantage in favor of the Lakers.

After the Bulls lost Game One, local media described Game Two as the biggest game in franchise history.

Since the Bulls had never been to the NBA Finals, maybe they were correct. Or maybe they were just a little dramatic.

Whatever the case, the Bulls knew the importance of Game Two, which took place 18 years ago today.

Coming out with more concentration and shaking off the nerves that plagued them in Game One, the Bulls ended up routing the Lakers 107-86 in Game Two.

Of course, this game is remembered for Jordan’s incredible layup below, beginning around 27 seconds.

I was in third grade when this game took place and can still remember my mouth dropping in my grandfather’s living room as I tried to comprehend what Jordan had just pulled off.

Beyond this play, did you know that Jordan was an amazing 15-for-18 from the field in Game Two?

Or that this incredible move marked his 13th field goal in a row?

Or that he also had a game-high 13 assists in addition to his game-high 33 points?

Don’t forget that he tied for the team lead with 7 rebounds.

Think Jordan was focused in Game Two?

I’d have to say so.

But it wasn’t just Jordan in Game Two.

As a team, the Bulls were mentally prepared beyond comprehension.

Starting point guard John Paxson was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field en route to 16 points.

Power forward Horace Grant and center Bill Cartwright were like Jordan in that they only missed three shots on the night. Grant scored 20 points on 10-for-13 shooting from the field while Cartwright scored 12 on 6-for-9 shooting.

The slacker in Chicago’s starting lineup, Scottie Pippen was a mere 50 percent shooting, going 10-for-20 for 20 points and adding 10 assists for good measure.

As a team, Chicago shot 61 percent from the field. Last night, the Orlando Magic shot 29.9 percent!

Chicago’s starting lineup shot a combined 73.6 percent from the field.

Had it not been for sharpshooter Craig Hodges and his 1-for-6 effort, the Bulls would have shot an even higher percentage.

Simply put, the Bulls were on fire in Game Two against the Lakers.

After this thrilling game, the Bulls would go on to L.A. and win three straight games at the old Great Western Forum.

In Game Three, the Bulls would comeback from a double-digit defict, force overtime on an incredible Jordan jumper and then coast to victory in overtime.

In Game Four, the Bulls would hold a sizable lead for most of the game and move to within one win of being NBA champs.

In Game Five, the Lakers showed the heart of champions, giving the Bulls a great fight. However, Paxson caught fire late in the game and the Bulls took the series and their first NBA title.

While I would enjoy all six of Chicago’s titles in the nineties, the first one is still the most satisfying to me because the Bulls finally got past the Pistons and were in their prime.

Watching Paxson hit these shots years later and the Bulls pull away in 1991 makes me feel like a 10 year old kid all over again.
