5-26-1997: Mourning Delivers Win, Angers God
Filed Under On This Day . . ., NBA, Chicago Bulls, Loose Balls
If there was one thing you did not want to do on the basketball court, that’s anger Michael Jeffrey Jordan.
Just ask former Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning.
After falling in an 0-3 hole to the Chicago Bulls as the result of a 24-point loss in Game Three of the 1997 Eastern Conference Finals, Mourning guaranteed that his team would win the next game.
Playing with urgency and reckless abandon, Mourning would live up to his guarantee by scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in a 7-point victory in Game Four.
Yet he would also make the crucial mistake of angering Jordan.
After Mourning landed a nasty elbow on Scottie Pippen in the third quarter and got involved in a skirmish with Dennis Rodman in the fourth quarter of Game Four, Jordan took exception and nearly shot the Bulls back to a comeback victory after an abysmal shooting start.
While the Heat may have won Game Four, Jordan would not forget Mourning’s tactics.
Getting into Mourning’s head and setting the tone for what would be a blowout victory, Jordan snubbed a handshake from the Heat star center at mid-court prior to Game Five.
Visibly upset by the snub, Mourning would only get off four shots in Game Five and end up with a quiet 13 points and 8 rebounds.
Pacing the Bulls to a 13-point Game Five victory and 4-1 series victory, Jordan would finish with a game-high 28 points.
The lesson to be learned: don’t ever piss off Michael Jordan, as his teammates attest to in the following video.
