5-28-1986: Bird Wins Third Straight MVP

Joining the likes of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain, Boston’s Larry Bird became only the third player in NBA history to win his third straight Most Valuable Player award on this day 23 years ago. Bird averaged 25.8 points, 9.8 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.9 steals per game during his 1985-1986 MVP campaign. More importantly, Bird’s Celtics won the NBA crown in a six-game triumph over the Houston Rockets in the 1986 NBA Finals.
