5-27-1996: Bulls Sweep in Shaq Finale

Now just one game away from reaching the 2009 NBA Finals after a stirring overtime victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers last night, the Orlando Magic saw its chances of reaching back-to-back Finals come to an end 13 years ago today. Avenging a six-game loss to the Magic in 1995, Michael Jordan scored 45 points on Memorial Day 1996 en route to the Chicago Bulls completing a four game sweep of Orlando in the Eastern Conference Finals. More dramatic for the Magic, this loss to Chicago would be Shaquille O’Neal’s last game in an Orlando uniform. 5-27-1991: Bulls Finally Get Past Pistons

All the physical play, mind games and dirty cheap shots of the Detroit Pistons went for naught on Memorial Day 18 years ago today when the Chicago Bulls finally knocked off the Bad Boys and advanced to the NBA Finals. After losing three straight seasons in the playoffs to the hated Pistons, the Bulls closed the door on Detroit’s championship run with a resounding and oh-so-satisfying Game Four rout that completed a sweep of the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals. While the Bulls had yet to win the title, you’d have to excuse Chicago players and fans for celebrating this victory at the time as if it was an NBA championship clincher.
