5-21-1986: Sampson Sends Rockets to Finals

Before San Antonio’s “Twin Towers” duo of David Robinson and Tim Duncan, there was the Houston Rockets pair of seven-foot behemoths, Akeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson. Twenty three years ago today, in the most glorious moment of the short-lived run by Houston’s “Twin Towers,” Sampson hit an incredible, twisting jumper at the buzzer of Game Five of the 1986 Western Conference Finals to defeat the favored Lakers and send the Rockets to the NBA Finals. Ranking John Paxson’s Hits & Misses: Part 2

Since becoming the Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Chicago Bulls in April 2003, John Paxson has certainly felt the stress that comes with this high-profile position. With Paxson now relinquishing more of the day-to-day duties with the team but maintaining a major say on all basketball decisions, he should at least be able to avoid the spotlight that he had grown to dislike. While Paxson has done a very good job with the Bulls overall, some of his decisions did not work out as planned.
