5-18-1998: Jordan Wins 5th NBA MVP
Filed Under On This Day . . ., NBA, Chicago Bulls, Loose Balls | 1 Comment
Entering the 1997-1998 NBA season, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls faced some very serious challenges to winning a third straight title and sixth championship in the decade. Management wanted to move on from the dynasty, and a contentious dynamic existed between unpopular General Manager Jerry Krause and some Chicago players and coaches. The team was a year older, and its depth was much thinner. Scottie Pippen would miss the first 35 games with an ankle injury, and Dennis Rodman was an uncertainty entering the season more than ever before. When it often looked like winning another title could be a bit too daunting for this team, Jordan would be Superman once again, playing in all 82 games, averaging 28.7 points, earning his fifth MVP award (awarded on this day 11 years ago), and adding to his remarkable legacy with a championship-winning jumper. Continue on to examine Jordan’s final MVP season.
