5-17-1987: Spurs Win David Robinson Lottery

Even though senior David Robinson would not be able to play for two years because of his military commitment to the United States, the 1987 NBA Draft Lottery was all about landing the first overall pick to select the smooth-shooting big man from Navy. Twenty-two years ago today, the Phoenix Suns and the San Antonio Spurs were the last two teams standing in the Robinson draft lottery when Lady Luck shined on the Alamo City. After selecting Robinson with the number-one pick in the 1987 NBA Draft and winning only 31 and 21 games in the two seasons waiting for him, the Spurs would improve by 34 games in the Admiral’s first season.
