The Chicago Bulls’ Michael Jordan was awarded the NBA Rookie of the Year Award on this day in 1985. Nearly a quarter of a century later, the Bulls seem to have a bright future with 2009 Rookie of the Year Derrick Rose at the helm of the franchise. While Rose just completed an amazing rookie season, Jordan’s first season in the league was out of this world. 5-16-1980: Magic Tips Off, Takes Center Stage

A couple of days before Mount St. Helen’s erupted in Washington state, Earvin “Magic” Johnson erupted 29 years ago today in Game Six of the 1980 NBA World Championship Series, leading a Los Angeles Lakers team sans injured league MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar past the Philadelphia 76ers and to an NBA title. After Abdul-Jabbar severely sprained his ankle in L.A.’s home victory in Game Five and was ruled out for Game Six in Philadelphia, the 6′9” rookie point guard Johnson started at center, played all five positions and sparked LA throughout the series clincher with an incredible stat line of 42 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. While this series would also be known for Julius Erving’s incredible baseline move in Game Four and Jabbar’s overall dominance before getting hurt, Johnson’s performance in Game Six would most be remembered as the unflappable 20-year-old won his first of five championships and the series’ MVP award.
