Paying Respect to Doc But Not His Players

Usually in long and tense series like this current first round battle between the underdog Chicago Bulls and the decimated Boston Celtics, it’s quite normal for fans to develop a hatred of players and coaches on the other team. While Chicago fans have made Rajon Rondo public enemy number one for good reason, it’s hard to have any dislike for Boston Head Coach Doc Rivers, who hasn’t used his team’s injuries as an excuse and has given the Bulls credit where credit’s due. In fact, Rivers had some candidly honest things to say about his Boston team during Game Six, something that is rarely seen in today’s NBA of massaging massive egos and letting players get away with murder.

The Bulls would be making vacation plans right now if it wasn’t for the play of John Salmons and Brad Miller last night in a do-or-die Game Six against the Boston Celtics. Cool as ice, Salmons carried the Bulls in the first two overtimes while a driven Miller got them there with his late heroics in the fourth quarter. See how the other Bulls graded out in the thrilling victory in triple overtime.

When Michael Jordan slayed the Utah Jazz in Game Six of the 1998 NBA Finals by dominating the final 38 seconds with a layup, steal and game-winning jumper, reserve guard Steve Kerr was accidentally heard on NBC amidst the post-game fray describing yet another one of Jordan’s superman moments. Clutching Jordan in his arms as the Bulls celebrated another title, Kerr candidly told #23 that he was “un-fucking-believable.”
Well excuse the language boys and girls, and I know this goes against all the principles of journalism that I learned in college, but this first round-series between the Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics is “un-fucking-believable.” Also beyond belief. Brutally ugly for Chicago in terms of holding leads and putting away the Celtics. But oh so beautiful in terms of different Chicago players stepping up each night, and the team not giving up when all hope seemed lost. And certifiably loony, with Game Six the craziest game of this delirious series.
