Heartbreak Hotel for the Illini
Filed Under Game Analysis, Commentary, NCAA Basketball | Leave a Comment
What is it with Penn State? The Illinois Fighting Illini have now dropped four of the last five against the improving Nittany Lions. For nearly 35 minutes last night, the Illini played arguably its best road game in the Big Ten season, coming out with focus and intensity, moving the ball, hitting tough shots and weathering several storms. But a late Illini scoring drought and a furious Penn State comeback in the game’s final five minutes — capped by a missed free throw by Mike Davis and a full-court layup by Talor Battle — left Illinois agonizing a tough defeat and Penn State dancing its way into the NCAA Tournament.

While the Illinois Fighting Illini have had a very surprising and satisfying season thus far, much is still at stake in tonight’s Big Ten regular season finale against Penn State. The Illini need a few more wins to ensure a four or five seed in the NCAA Tournament, but more importantly, there is the matter of making up for the debacle that took place a little more than two weeks ago when the team scored a meager 33 points in a nationally-embarrassing home loss to the Nittany Lions.

What is to be gathered from these 2008-2009 Chicago Bulls with the playoffs still attainable in the stretch run of the NBA season? While the Bulls looked terrible last night in Charlotte but better at home tonight against Golden State, this team is way too inconsistent in its mental approach to the game, from its players to its novice head coach, to make the playoffs. So let’s just kill that bird now.

Bulls to Wear Uni Patch Honoring Red & Norm
Filed Under Analysis/Commentary, NBA, Chicago Bulls | Leave a Comment
Continuing its tribute to late greats Johnny “Red” Kerr and Norm Van Lier, the Chicago Bulls announced today that the team will wear a uniform patch honoring both men for the remainder of the season. While this is certainly a classy move by the Bulls, the organization should seriously think about making Kerr’s nickname of “Red” a permanent staple on their uniforms, especially when taking into account his significance to the development of the franchise and his unending love and passion for the team.

Chicago Bulls General Manager John Paxson appeared on Comcast’s “Monsters in the Morning” earlier today in what turned out to be a civil yet frustrating interview that left this fan wanting a little more in terms of the questions asked. Here’s a list of issues that I would have liked to have seen addressed with the often criticized yet always classy Paxson.
