Prior to the Chicago Bulls thrilling comeback against the Houston Rockets on Saturday night, the organization provided a classy video tribute to the recently departed Johnny “Red” Kerr and Norm Van Lier, both long-time fixtures with the team who died on Thursday. Making up for a wrong that took place two weeks ago during a halftime ceremony for Kerr, the Bulls got it right when pairing up Van Lier and the Red Man in a stirring, balanced and top-notch video memorial.

After falling behind 17 points to the Houston Rockets at the end of the third quarter, the Chicago Bulls looked like its tribute to franchise icons Johnny “Red” Kerr and Norm Van Lier — both of whom died this past Thursday — would be limited to a moving pre-game video. However, a stirring fourth-quarter comeback would leave the Rockets stunned, Bulls fan smiling, and Kerr and Van Lier toasting to a cold beverage somewhere in a better place.

A Tough Day for the Chicago Bulls

What was already scheduled to be a historic day for the Chicago Bulls organization when the team visited President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. turned out to be a historic day for sadder reasons when Norm Van Lier and Johnny “Red” Kerr passed away. While Kerr’s death from prostate cancer was expected, the loss of Van Lier is an absolute shock. Both Kerr and Van Lier played huge roles in the shaping of the Bulls, and nobody was as passionate about the state of professional basketball in the city as these two larger-than-life, unique men. The city of Chicago mourns the loss of two individuals who will never be seen or matched again.
