January 12, 2000 — Remembering Bobby Phills

Pro athletes, especially basketball players, constantly amaze us with their physical attributes and overall athletic abilities, often seeming as if they’re not human but rather from another planet or at least a science lab. For many of us, the human side of athletes is not fully apparent until those players retire and are seen on TV years later, looking older and possibly out of shape as compared to their playing days. In the worst instances, we are reminded that these heroes on the court are human through death, as was the unfortunate case of former Charlotte Hornets guard Bobby Phills, who died nine years ago today in an avoidable, tragic car accident.
