The 2001 Duke Blue Devilsby Chris Maynard, chris@hoops4thesoul.com

The battle of Tobacco Round has finally made its way to the NCAA Tournament, in Hoops 4 the Soul’s Sweet Sixteen bracket of the last sixteen (make that 18) men’s basketball champions. The outstanding 2001 Blue Devils featuring Jason Williams, Shane Battier, Mike Dunleavy and Carlos Boozer pair up with the 1993 North Carolina Tar Heels squad of George Lynch, Eric Montross and Donald Williams. Coach K versus the Taquan Dean of college basketball coaches. The folks in Chapel Hill and Durham are salivating at the mouths, the folks in my beloved Raleigh continue with their inferiority complex.

1990 UNLV Players Casually Practicing for 1998 Kentucky

1990 UNLV is the number-one overall seed in Hoops 4 the Soul’s Sweet Sixteen Tournament featuring the past 16 (make that 18) NCAA champions. The Runnin’ Rebels are yawning over its first round opponent, the overachieving 1998 Kentucky Wildcats. CBS has slotted this West Regional game at The Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico in the 6:35 time slot, so that Dick Vitale and the whole nation will finally get the opportunity to watch a Duke-North Carolina game in primetime.

Basket by Christian LaettnerAlright, here’s the premise. Sweet Sixteen Tournament of the last 18 NCAA Champions (with repeat champions Florida in 2006 and 2007 and Duke in 1991 and 1992 each being combined into one team). Seedings are based on my opinions of best champions and not-so-hot champions (make that teams who may have gotten hot at the right time). Game Previews to come. Tournament starts early next week.
