The NBA Europe Live Tour got the professional basketball preseason kicked off this weekend, and three preseason games took place back in the States tonight. The matchups included a battle of two young and intriguing teams in the East, aging conference finals foes, and a battle of has-beens in the Atlantic Conference.

Birthday Boy Tyson Wheeler and lefty backcourt mate Cuttino Mobley Nearly Led Rhode Island to Historic Heights in 1998 A crafty point guard in a 5′10” package, Tyson Wheeler may not be a familiar name among basketball fans. The former University of Rhode Island standout teamed up with Cuttino Mobley to lead an upstart Rams team on the verge of the 1998 Final Four before losing a heartbreaking Elite Eight game against Mark Madsen and the Stanford Cardinal. Turning 32 years old today, Wheeler would play in one NBA game the following season with the Denver Nuggets and then begin a successful career overseas.

As the Cardinal nation is celebrating its major upset this weekend against USC in football, Hoops 4 the Soul examines the classic 1998 Elite Eight matchup between Stanford and Rhode Island, and then compares the different professional careers of Wheeler and Mobley, who is now entering his tenth season in the NBA.
