BRUCE BOWEN VERSUS LEBRON JAMES
James had an incredible series against the Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals (with his Game Five performance the best of his young career), and will need to really be outstanding in the Finals for Cleveland to have any chance of the upset. James must control the game by attacking the hoop and either taking it to the rim or drawing enough defenders to kick the ball out to open jump shooters. You know James is going to score at least 20 and get you close to double-digit rebounds and assists. He’s going to need to average 30-something, grab 10 boards and be around seven assists for the Cavs to have a realistic shot of taking this thing. Everything obviously goes through James, and Spurs’ Coach Gregg Popovich will throw everything and the kitchen sink at the four year veteran.
San Antonio figures to throw a lot at James and will begin with the pesky Bowen, who is a physical and dirty defender who likes to get his hands up and in on the ball handler. With that said, Bowen’s tactics won’t be able to deter a player of James build. You saw how Deron Williams was able to get into the lane against Bowen throughout the Western Conference Finals, and James will be able to do likewise. The whole role of Bowen in this series is to really body James and try to get into the youngster’s head. That’s how Bowen operates when he is physically overmatched by the opponent. On the offensive end, Bowen is a good shooter when open and having his feet set. He can hit the big shot and must be kept honest from the outside.
Advantage: James and the Cavaliers
Come on. Give me a break here. James is one of the most unique players to ever enter the NBA while Bowen is a guy who survives in the league by doing whatever he has to. This is embarrassing, and James should take it to Bowen as long as he keeps his head and doesn’t let the veteran’s cheapness bother him. James will have to be on the attack early and not necessarily look for his jump shot but rather get his teammates involved and confident. From there, James can take over the game late as he can’t be guarded and can get to the lane and the free throw line whenever he desires. James would be wise to get his points inside at the start of the game and find a shooting rhythm and then take it outside a bit.
