Grizzlies Add Mike Conley Jr. from “The” Ohio State University
The Memphis Grizzlies need to start bringing in some winners. General Manager Chris Wallace accomplished that last Thursday night when he selected superb freshman guard Mike Conley Jr. with the fourth overall pick in the first round. And it sounds like Wallace may not be done as he recently flew to Argentina to woo restricted Chicago Bulls’ free agent Andres Nocioni, a passionate and very underrated small forward who never takes a night off and has some serious offensive game.
Conley Jr. might have been a bit of a reach at four, but Memphis clearly needed a point guard as Damon Stoudamire is on his last legs and veteran Chucky Atkins is better served as a backup. Conley Jr. may take some time to develop but the kid’s been a winner on all levels. While he may have been overshadowed by Greg Oden last year, Conley Jr. was the drum which made the Buckeyes beat (along with undrafted guard Ron Lewis). Conley Jr. is a true point guard who is very crafty in getting to the rim. He always looks in control and is unflappable. With this selection, Memphis now has two exciting guard prospects in Conley Jr. and second-year man Kyle Lowry, a tenacious slasher and rebounder in a 6′3” package.
Sure, Memphis might have been better off with a Jeff Green, Corey Brewer or even a Joakim Noah, but taking Conley Jr. fills a need. The Grizzlies are now looking to fill the wing position with Nocioni, who had a rough second-round series against the Detroit Pistons while struggling with plantar fasciitis. Nocioni’s playoff performance this season was a mirage; when on, this guy serves as the heart-and-soul of the Bulls. Whether it’s crashing the boards, being a pesky defender, hitting spot-up threes, or taking it to the hole with reckless abandon, Nocioni always play the game on the edge. Memphis would be blessed to have a guy like Nocioni, who could maybe a light a fire on this team that missed the playoffs last year.
I would hate to see Nocioni leave Chicago and highly doubt a sign-and-trade involving Gasol to Chicago will take place unless Ben Gordon is a part of that deal as well. I’m hoping Memphis doesn’t snag Nocioni, because if they do add him to Conley Jr., Wallace and new coach Mark Iavaroni will have themselves a nice offseason.
This just in. It looks like the Bulls are going to push hard to retain Nocioni, offering him a five-year deal worth $38 million. Bulls offering Nocioni $38M
