The free throw has been described as “the easiest shot in basketball” but has hardly been so for many players, including Phoenix Suns’ behemoth center Shaquille O’Neal.
A career 52.5 percent free throw shooter, O’Neal and his penchant for being ungrateful at the charity stripe has spawned the development of the Hack-A-Shaq defensive policy and the employment of free throw shooting coaches throughout his career.
Shaq’s woes from the foul line were especially apparent on this day in 2000 when he set a dubious NBA record by missing all 11 of his free throw attempts as the Los Angeles Lakers fell 103-95 to the Seattle Sonics.
O’Neal’s bricks and clanks from the free throw line against Seattle shattered a 40-year-old record held by Wilt Chamberlain, who went 0-for-10 from the foul line during a game against the Detroit Pistons on November 4, 1960.
While the foul line has often led to foul results throughout Shaq’s career, it was certainly a welcoming spot for Dominique Wilkins and the Atlanta Hawks on December 8, 1992.
Wilkins found himself on the right side of free throw shooting history when he made a record 23 of 23 attempts at the line during a 123-114 Atlanta victory over the Chicago Bulls.
As a team, Atlanta was an amazing 39-40 from the free throw line in this game; in comparison, Chicago only got to the line 19 times with Michael Jordan visiting it twice (both makes). Here’s guessing what Chicago head coach Phil Jackson had to complain about following this game!
With that said, here are some other memorable moments from the free throw line that quickly come to mind:
-
Following a phantom foul call late in overtime, Michigan’s Rumeal Robinson knocks down two-pressure packed foul shots to carry the Wolverines over Seton Hall in the 1989 NCAA championship game.
-
With a chance to seal Game One of the 1995 Finals, Orlando’s Nick Anderson misses four consecutive free throws during an eventual overtime loss and series sweep to the Houston Rockets.
-
With no-time remaining and a chance to shoot his Memphis team into the 2005 NCAA Tournament with a Conference USA championship victory over Louisville, freshman Darius Washington misses two of three freebies.
